Wimborne V Bideford A.F.C.

In a game of two distinct halves, Wimborne were knocked out of this season’s competition by a goal in added-on time.

As in previous cup games, Manager Matty Holmes gave squad players their opportunity against a team from the league below, but who had beaten Tiverton in the previous round.

A feature of the first half was referee Hillier-Smith’s whistle as Bideford tried to disrupt Wimborne’s passing football (9 fouls in the first 18 minutes).

Luke Holmes hit a shot from distance on 6 minutes which stung keeper Joe Moore’s hands. Eleven minutes later the keeper made a brave save at the feet of Steve Flynn who had been put through by Chad Collins’ long ball. Curtis Young came in from his wing to shoot just wide, and Holmes tried an audacious volley from Billy Maybury’s diagonal.

Although the home side were dominating play, we had to wait until the 42nd minute for the opening goal. Lee Francis found Holmes in space on the right of the penalty area. He drifted inside and fired a low shot into the net.

After Holmes had had another effort well-saved by Moore on 50 minutes, it was the visitors who took control of the game with energetic, attacking play. Collins saved from a point-blank header on the hour mark, but five minutes later, the equaliser, which the visitors had threatened, materialised. After a spell of pressure and corners, full-back Ben Palmer drove the ball through Collins’ legs from 8 yards.

With momentum behind them, The Robins sensed a winner. James Mayne headed over from 5 yards on 85 minutes, Collins’ tipped another effort over the bar, and was relieved to see a ricochet go inches wide. The winning goal came two minutes into added-on time, when substitute Joel Randall scored from an acute angle near the left by-line.
