Saturday 7th July – pre-season friendly

Players and officials had a good workout in this entertaining and competitive game. Wimborne dominated the first half and scored twice through strikers Kieran Roberts and Tony Lee; Horsham, who play in the Isthmian League at the same level, came back strongly in the second period with Charlie Harris scoring a deserved equaliser from the half-way line in the last minute.

Wimborne made the ideal start on 6 minutes. Luke Holmes threaded the ball through the visitors’ defence in the inside-right channel for Roberts who rounded the keeper to score – welcome to Cuthbury, Kieran!

Horsham displayed well-worked corner moves, and from one Malachi Hudson headed just over on 11 minutes. But most of the attacking play was towards the Horsham goal. Roberts’ opportunistic shot stunned the keeper on 13 minutes, and a minute later Luke Burbidge’s trickery earned a corner. A typical thrusting run by Josh Buck down the left ended with Roberts firing goalwards again.

At the other end a fine tackle by skipper Billy Maybury, a block by Franklyn Clarke, and a clearing header by Joe Byrne all denied the visitors. There was time for an outrageous back-heel by Clarke before Wimborne doubled their advantage on 42 minutes. Tony Lee, returning to the fray following treatment from physio Laurence Russell’s bag of tricks, charged at the Horsham defence down the inside-left channel. Two ricochets later, he beat the keeper to the ball and scored – a real striker’s goal made out of nothing!

Five minutes into the second period, that man Lee received the ball centrally thirty yards out, and there was only one thing on his mind – his fierce shot was bravely blocked. Four minutes later he was a brick in Wimborne’s tall, defensive wall and blocked a Horsham free-kick. As Horsham came more into the game, Byrne, who always seemed to be in the right place at the right time, made another clearing header.

At the mid-point of the half, Maybury’s free-kick was well saved by Horsham’s keeper, and moments later Cameron Plain made an equally good diving save to deny Horsham’s no. 11. But after Clarke had cleared Rob O’Toole’s header off the line, Horsham reduced the deficit on 71 minutes. A corner from the left eluded defenders at the near post, and the unmarked Will Miles forced the ball over the line.

There was a flurry of substitutions before Lee fired over from 30 yards, and Hudson curled a clever effort just wide of Plain’s far post. Then Horsham grabbed that last-gasp equaliser. Plain’s clearance from the right of his area was instantly controlled by Harris in the centre-circle, and he arrowed the ball straight down the pitch and into the unguarded net.

From this showing, and considering the absentees, manager Matty Holmes is putting together a strong squad. Deciding on his best starting XI is going to be a difficult task.

Wimborne: Plain, Maybury, Buck (Dodd 78), Byrne (Tilsed 83), Poole, Clarke, Stokoe (Bradley 78), Roberts, Lee (Graham 86), Burbidge, Holmes
