Wimborne extended their unbeaten home league record to six games – just! Toby Holmes’ equaliser came in time added-on to cancel out Marc Charles-Smith’s early opener.
Manager Matty Holmes gave a first start to recent signing Carl Pettefer, with Lee Francis again filling in on the right side of defence.
Farnborough shocked the home support at the Koolpak Stadium by taking the lead in the fourth minute. Centre-forward Charles-Smith was played through on the right, and he advanced from 30 yards out to coolly slot past Gerard Benfield.
In response, Luke Burbidge’s cross to the far post was headed goalwards by Luke Holmes, but keeper Liam Beach made the first of several excellent saves to claw the ball off the line. His next was to thwart Toby’s grubber shot from an acute angle on the left.
Pettefer was getting through a prodigious work-load in mid-field, but it was the visitors’ speedy wingers, Michael Fernandes and Reggie Young, who took the eye. Fernandes rode through 3 tackles on 14 minutes before the ball was scrambled away, and ten minutes later, from a quick break, his floated effort was just wide. At the other end, Toby Holmes’ header from Pettefer’s cross was the second Wimborne goal-bound effort cleared off the line.
Back came the visitors, and after Young had run with the ball along the edge of the penalty area to set up his fellow winger, Fernandes’ shot was inches over Benfield’s cross-bar. On 35 minutes, Franklyn Clarke whipped a ball across the face of the Boro goal, and 3 minutes later, from James Stokoe’s pass, Clarke’s drive from 25 yards whistled past the post.
For the first 20 minutes of the second period, the teams cancelled each other out. Matt Oldring made a trade-mark block on Elliot Bonds’ shot, and the immaculate Billy Maybury headed a dangerous corner clear before timing a tackle to perfection in the penalty area. With defences dominating, clear-cut chances were as rare as sightings of Santa.
On 80 minutes, Sam Davidson headed Burbidge’s free-kick back across the goal, and in the ensuing scramble the ball was once more cleared off the line. On 86 minutes, following a quick break, Burbidge’s inviting cross eluded everyone.
But finally, after the excellent visiting central defenders had denied Toby a shooting opportunity, came that late equaliser. As the clock ticked over into added-on time, Burbidge lofted the ball over the Boro defence. Toby Holmes beat keeper Beach in a foot race, kept his balance and steered the ball home to the relief of Wimborne’s supporters.
How important will that goal, and point, be at the end of the season?
