FULL TIME: Wimborne Town 2-4 Basingstoke Town

For the third time this season, Basingstoke came from behind against the Dorset outfit to win.

It was the home side who opened the scoring on 24 minutes. Billy Maybury’s fine diagonal pass was moved on by Luke Burbidge to Franklyn Clarke who curled the ball inside the far post from 20 yards. The visitors equalised deep into time added-on at the end of the first half when Yvan Jourdan pounced on a loose bouncing ball from a deep free-kick to beat keeper Gerard Benfield.
Basingstoke grabbed hold of the game with a bright start to the second period, and took the lead on 50 minutes. A long throw was flicked on to Ben Wright for a 5-yard tap-in. Wimborne had a great chance to equalise on 70 minutes when Toby Holmes glanced Burbidge’s free-kick wide from six yards.
Almost immediately the visitors doubled their lead when the unfortunate Maybury tried to intercept a pass but could only deflect the ball beyond Benfield from 15 yards. And the lead was further increased five minutes later when Sam Argent converted Sam Smart’s cross with a spectacular overhead.
Although Toby Holmes scored from Burbidge’s pass with ten minutes to go, Basingstoke comfortably saw out the game for a crucial three points.
