Wimborne played their return league fixture against Merthyr Town who were sitting in the top half of the table. Having lost 2-0 when they travelled to Wales last November, Wimborne gained revenge by scoring 4 times as well as keeping a clean sheet.

Toby Holmes achieved his first hat trick in the Evo Stik League South Premier Division and a stunning volley by Luke Holmes saw the ball fly into the top corner. A healthy crowd of 433 saw the Magpies win a very entertaining game.

Wimborne’s first chance came when Luke Burbidge whipped in a free kick towards Luke Holmes but the midfielder headed the ball wide on the 9th minute. Merthyr’s Ian Traylor struck the ball for Gerard Benfield to save 8 minutes later. Full back Stefan Penny curled in a low cross across goal, but with no receiver on the other end the ball just skipped past the post.

Wimborne’s best opportunity so far came on the 21st minute when defender Matty Oldring headed the ball at close range to the top corner , but Merthyr’s goalkeeper  Lewis Webb responded with a quick reaction save to deny the hosts from scoring.

Merthyr forward Ryan Prosser used his strength to hold off Sam Davidson when he turned at an angle and fired the ball towards the bottom left corner which narrowly went wide. However, Wimborne scored first on the 24th minute when Luke Holmes played a lofted pass to Toby Holmes who darted past Merthyr’s defence and tapped the ball past Webb’s gloves to make it 1-0.

Having earlier been out-muscled in the box by Jared Wright, Toby Holmes found himself in the same position but dribbled past defender Matthew Harris and slotted the ball to the bottom right corner giving the Magpies a 2-0 lead in the 42nd minute.

Coming out for the second half, Wimborne extended their lead when Toby was played through on the right hand side and smashed the ball to the bottom left corner as he celebrated his first ever hat trick in the league on the 53rd minute. Three minutes later, dribbling alongside the terrace side, midfielder Luke Holmes launched an intriguing shot as the ball dipped to the bottom right corner as again Webb made an impressive save to his left.

From a set piece Ian Traylor thumped a low ball to the bottom left which Benfield saved to keep another clean sheet under his belt. Franklyn Clarke whacked the ball over the bar inside the box, and again was unable to finish a close opportunity when a lofted pass was played to the midfielder who toe-poked the ball over the bar on the 74th minute. Despite that, a minute later saw Clarke cross the ball towards the unmarked Luke Holmes who volleyed home an exquisite shot towards the top right corner and shared his delight with the home fans.

That was the last goal which was tallied down on the score sheet on a dark Saturday afternoon. The Magpies celebrated a resounding 4-0 win over Merthyr when the final whistle was blown by the referee, delighted to get a great result against a tough team such as Merthyr, which boosts the team’s morale.

Wimborne are set to play at Staines, who currently sit at the foot of the table, on Saturday.
