Wimborne bagged their fifth successive home league win in a highly entertaining game as both teams created goal attempts galore. But fine goalkeeping, magnificent defending, and profligate finishing kept the score down.
On 13 minutes Toby Holmes headed Luke Burbidge’s cross over the bar when well-positioned, before Tivvy’s Tom Gardner made a goal-saving block to deny the striker.
At the other end Tom Bath selflessly set-up Levi Landricombe who was thwarted by an acrobatic goal-line clearance from Paddy Hester. Then Burbidge’s chip over visiting keeper Liam Armstrong came back off the cross-bar.
Surprisingly the crowd had to wait until the 48th minute for the first goal. Billy Maybury’s 25 yard free-kick evaded the wall, but not Armstrong who made a spectacular diving save. From the resulting corner, Luke Holmes’ cross to the far post was headed home by Toby Holmes.
Five minutes later home stopper Gerard Benfield made a triple save to keep out the visitors.
After Landricombe had spurned two more good chances, Burbidge scored a great individual goal on 87 minutes to take Wimborne out of reach. Setting off thirty yards out, he beat two defenders before drawing the keeper and slotting home.
Tiverton substitute Josh Wadham pulled one back three minutes into stoppage time, but by then Wimborne’s defence had secured the points.
Joy for Wimborne was tempered by a serious injury to skipper Scott Arnold after 9 minutes. It happened when he went to block a shot with another defender and was left on the ground in agony. He was carefully stretchered off before being taken to hospital with what we understand is a knee injury. We all wish Scott a speedy recovery.
