Match Preview – Wimborne Town vs Mousehole
OFFER: This weekend will see Free admission for military card holders.
This will be the first time that Mousehole have made the 200 mile trip from south of Penzance to Wimborne. After winning the Western League Premier Division last season, they are only the second Cornish side to play at Step 4. Manager Jake Ash’s team have made a terrific start at this level.
With games in hand on three of the teams above them, The Seagulls lie fifth in the table with a W5 D2 L2 GF 23 GA 12 record, which is even more impressive when you note that six of those games have been away from their Trungle Parc ground: W3 D1 L2. Mousehole won 4-0 at Westbury, drew 2-2 at Tavistock, won 4-3 at Manor Farm, won 2-1 at Yate, lost 0-1 at Frome, and, in their last league game, lost 2-3 at Melksham on 28th October when skipper and centre-forward Mark Goldsworthy suffered a shoulder injury. That was Mousehole’s third successive league and cup away defeat.
The Seagulls have only failed to score two or more in league games once, at Frome. Their most eye-catching results have both been 4-0 wins – at Westbury on the opening day of the season, and at home to league leaders Willand on 21st October. Jack Bray-Evans is their leading scorer with fourteen in league and cup games.
This season Mousehole have had good runs in both FA competitions. In the FA Cup they beat Ilfracombe (4-1), St,Blazey (5-1) and Bashley (5-3) before going out to Salisbury (0-5). In the FA Trophy they travelled 250 miles to knock out Malvern (4-2), then 86 miles to knock out their nearest Southern League “neighbours” Tavistock (2-0), before bowing out at Larkhall (0-2).
After Saturday’s goal-less draw at second-in-the-table Bemerton, Wimborne find themselves second-in-the-table, having been overtaken by Willand, with a W6 D3 L2 GF 21 GA 11 record. At New Cuthbury it’s W4 D1 L0. Since drawing their first home league game with Exmouth (1-1), The Magpies have beaten Malvern (2-0), Bideford (3-1), Manor Farm (4-0), and, on 28th October Yate (1-0). Harry Baker has now racked up twelve league and cup goals, while the defence has kept two successive clean sheets. Josh Carmichael limped off in the second half at Bemmy, and may be an injury doubt. Lewis Beale, Cam Munn and Ben Scorey all impressed when they came off the bench. With others in Tim Sills’ talented squad keeping match-fit with Christer’s Reserves, it will be interesting to see what team Tim decides is best to test the free-scoring Cornishmen.
With two of the division’s top scoring teams, and two of the division’s leading goalscorers going head-to-head on the super surface of New Cuthbury, this is a game you won’t want to miss.
Printed programmes will, of course, be on sale.
