What a difference five days makes! After Saturday’s disappointment, a dogged and determined Wimborne left Sholing with their second away win of the season, thanks to Billy Walker’s first half goal, giving manager Tim Sills a win on his 100th game in charge.
Tim shuffled his pack, making four changes from Saturday’s game with Walker, Scorey, Morgan and Lovell coming in for Biss, Neale, Bedford and Holmes.
The game got off to a lively start with Folivi dragging a shot inches wide for the hosts in just the second minute, before Wimborne replied with a chance of their own as Fletcher fired a loose ball over from the edge of the box.
Wimborne were now in the ascendency, despite an early enforced substitution with Burrows forced off with a hip injury and could have had a penalty in the twelfth minute. In a sea of players Morgan’s shot hit a raised arm, and despite strong appeals from those in blue, the referee waved them away.
The Magpies wouldn’t have to wait long for an opener though, coming in the 20th minute. A Carmichael free kick was swung in, and despite goalkeeper Nash initially doing well in his attempt to prevent a corner, Walker managed to get in between him and the ball to poke home from a narrowing angle.
From there the half was a battle in midfield, with few chances, until we approached half time. Bedford fired over after taking on his man in the box and Lovell did well down the right putting in a dangerous cross, however Fletcher was unable to get any meaningful contact on the ball – had he done, it would have been a certain second.
The second half started as it meant to go on. Settling into an early rhythm; Sholing attempting to find a leveller, Wimborne countering with balls up to Fletcher, then Holmes, on the break, and Targett mopping up at the back – and repeat.
Just after the hour mark there were half chances for Carmichael; firstly, having an attempted lob of Nash go narrowly over, then a free kick which was comfortably saved.
In the 82nd minute Akinola had the hosts first chance of the half as his shot from the edge of the box inched narrowly wide, but as Sholing pressed forward, gaps at the back were starting to open.
As the clock turned to 90, Holmes ran through on goal, before going down just outside the box. Targett appeared as though he was the last man but was shown just a yellow.
Six minutes of injury time were allocated, but Wimborne held firm at the back to see out the game and pick up a hard earned second away win of the season. After Saturday’s performance, this result comes as a welcome relief ahead of our match with Gloucester at the Wyatt Homes Stadium in just two days’ time, sending the travelling fans home happy and full of festive cheer!
