Wimborne Town defeated Weymouth for a second time this season, after a 2-0 victory in the FA Trophy thanks to quick second half goals from Max Bustamante and Josh Carmichael.
Wimborne made three changes from last week’s FA Cup tie with Worthing, with Drew Eccott-Young and Sam Roberts coming into defence and a second start for Alex Borges.
Wimborne started the game quickly, putting pressure on the Terras from the get-go, with the visitors looking lively on the counter.
The stop-start nature of the first half allowed the visitors a succession of free kicks near the edge of the area but failed to make them count, gaining nothing more than gasps from the away fans.
As the half neared its conclusion Wimborne started to create clearcut opportunities; Williams appeared to be tripped as he charged into the area but, despite vocal appeals from the home support, no penalty was given. Moments later Josh Carmichael floated in a free kick from deep, meeting the head of Will Fletcher who found space in the box, but Weymouth keeper Ben Clark reacted well to turn behind for a corner.
On the stroke of half time, the Magpies thought they’d taken the lead after Josh McQuoid timed his run and slotted home from close range after a nice move. The linesman, however, raised his flag and the goal was disallowed – it must have been mighty close.
The second half began much like the first ended, with the Magpies on top but unable to turn chances into goals. However, just as memories might have been turning to the past two seasons of penalty shootout exits at this stage of the competition, Wimborne found the breakthrough.
On the 77th minute, and just minutes after switching wings, the two wingers combined. Williams found space down the right and stood up a cross just over the head of the defence and the lively Joe Smith, but perfectly for Max Bustamante to latch onto at the far post, volleying the ball against the ground and bouncing high into the roof of the net past Clark.
Wimborne wouldn’t have to wait long for a second as, in the 83rd minute, a penalty was awarded to the Magpies after a push in the box. Josh Carmichael stepped up and slotted it hard and low into the bottom corner.
As the clock counted down the remaining minutes, Wimborne saw the game out, with Plain making a good save low to his right in the last minute of injury time.
The final whistle saw Wimborne progress to the FA Trophy First Round Proper with another Dorset Derby win, and in the hat for Monday’s draw. It was another good win for the Magpies, signing off five-consecutive home games with a victory.
