The Magpies come back from a goal down to seal all three points under the lights after a fantastic first half brace from Lewis Williams, and late goals from Cam Munn and Joe Smith.
Tim Sills made two changes from Saturday’s narrow defeat at league leaders Walton & Hersham, with Josh Carmichael returning from suspension, and a first start for Ajani Burchall. Wimborne looked to make an emphatic response from Saturday but had to do it the hard way after going behind early on for the second game in a row.
The Bluebells got off to a fast start; Cam Plain was tested from close range by Corey Evans in just the fourth minute but did well to deny Yate’s talented talisman.
Yate would not be waiting much longer to break the deadlock as a sublime pass from Will Larvin in the ninth minute was collected by Evans, with the loanee composing his shot this time and slotting past Plain.
After a slow first 20 minutes Wimborne started to work their way into the game, with Lewis Williams, who had looked threatening from the first whistle, rifling into the side netting, a first glimpse of what was to come.
However, just as the Magpies started to gain the ascendancy, came another blow as Ajani Burchall pulled up with an injury and was replaced on the 27th minute. Ajani impressed with his cameo against Walton and Hersham, and we hope that the injury is nothing too serious.
Ten minutes later Wimborne got the reward that their ascendancy deserved. Cam Munn carried the ball towards the edge of the ‘D’ where he was brought down by James Taylor, who received a yellow card. Up stepped Lewis Williams, who to this point had never taken a free kick in a competitive game, who sublimely curled the ball over the wall, far past the keepers reach and into the top corner of the net to equalise for the Magpies.
One became two just before the break, as a mix up in the Bluebells defence led to goalkeeper Aaron Sainsbury far away from the sticks and in a race to the touchline with Will Fletcher. There was only going to be one winner, as the forward brushed past the stranded goalkeeper, zipping the ball across the turf and past the oncoming Yate defence, with Williams using his pace to charge into the box and tap home his second goal of the game.
During half time, Sills made his second substitution of the game with Will Fletcher, who was on a caution, making way for Joe Smith. Wimborne started the second half how they finished the first, and in the 50th minute, a cross from the right-hand side found Max Bustamante in the box, who half volleyed it just over the bar.
Chances were being created freely; Smith hit the side netting after good work in the box, then was denied by Sainsbury in a one-on-one, before Bustamante too was denied one-on-one by the Yate stopper.
It took until the 88th minute for Wimborne to make sure of the points and grab their third of the night, with Sam Jackson’s cross deflected only as far as Cam Munn, who fired home in convincing fashion. Munn had been relentless all evening, so a goal was well deserved and put the cherry on the cake in what was an impressive performance.
Joe Smith then got his reward for his tenacious display when he added a fourth late on in the 90+6th minute, which capped off a truly dominant second half display for the Magpies.
Wimborne showed their resilience to come from behind and take the points, lifting us to fourth in the league standings. Next up is a trip down the A35 to take on Dorchester in the Dorset Magpie Derby.
