A youthful Wimborne Town side advanced to the next round of the Dorset Senior Cup with a 5-2 triumph over Hamworthy Recreation FC at the Meyson Properties Stadium.

It was a game that saw a plethora of current and ex-academy talent play for the Magpies against the finalists of the last two years of the competition, with First Team captain and interim Academy head coach, Sam Jackson, filling in for Tim Sills in the dugout.

Fin Toghill and Joe Smith both bagged braces, whilst Ajani Burchall also picked up a goal after returning from injury. The hosts pulled a couple of goals back in the second half but were unable to stop the rout.

There were 11 changes to the side following Saturday’s draw at Hungerford. Joe Smith, Ben Scorey, Alex Borges and Joe Ryan were brought in, alongside youngsters Billy Barton, Jack Copperwaite, Brandon Channell, Beau Jenkins, Alfie Matthews, Fin Toghill and Fin Richardson.

Ham Rec had the first real chance of the game, as Edward Hodge forced a good close-range save from Barton in the opening moments.

Though it didn’t take long for the Magpies to take the lead. In the 10th minute, Smith latched onto a ball over the top on the right-hand-side before driving into the box and playing a pass across goal towards Ryan. The ball was cleared back to Toghill who hit a low shot into the back of the net.

Toghill came close to getting a second of the match just nine minutes later, as his curling effort from outside the box crashed off the post.

In the 22nd Minute, Richardson broke away on the left and put a ball into the box that was cleared only to the middle of the penalty area. However, neither Matthews or Toghill could get a shot off and eventually the ball was put out for a corner.

Just a minute later, Toghill did grab his second goal. He found time and space just outside the box to hit a low shot into the bottom left corner and double Wimborne’s lead.

Things went from bad to worse for the hosts 12 minutes later, as Hamworthy stopper, Shane Murphy, lost the ball in the box and allowed Smith to tap in the Magpies third.

As the second 45 commenced, the Magpies continued the pressure; Smith thought he’d made it 4-0 just two minutes into the half, but the linesman’s flag signalled offside.

Wimborne’s first substitution of the game saw the introduction of Burchall, who had been sidelined since October after picking up an injury against Yate Town, replacing Ryan. Burchall’s impact was instant, scoring with his second touch of the match inside the box and giving his side a commanding advantage.

Wimborne made their second substitution in the 56th minute, with Kester Wilson replacing Alfie Matthews, before Thomas Blair gave Ham Rec a goal back to make it 4-1.

The hosts reprieve was short lived though, as two minutes later Smith put in the Magpies fifth goal with a simple finish from close-range.

Two senior players in Cam Munn and Max Bustamante were brought on late to see out the victory, with Murphy reacting well to deny Bustamante one-on-one with two minutes left to play.

Ham Rec did manage to get another goal back from close range with the last kick of the game to give them a consolation.

As the final whistle went, it was a strong 5-2 win for Wimborne Town in the cup, with the clubs promising youngsters catching the eye with their strong display. Attention now turns to the Magpies home clash with Chatham Town in the FA Trophy Second Round on Saturday.
