Wimborne Town collected a point in the capital thanks to a second half equaliser from Max Bustamante.
Tim Sills made three changes to his starting eleven from the side which beat Gosport Borough during the week, with Will Fletcher making way for Joe Smith, Ben Scorey replacing the injured Sam Roberts and Owen Roundell replacing Josh McQuoid.
It was a sharp start for the Magpies, within the first two minutes came the first proper chance of the game after Roundell’s strike was hit inches above the crossbar after a sublime set-up from Josh Carmichael.
The visitors started to channel lots of chances down the right-hand side with Bustamante causing a lot of issues in the first twenty minutes, creating plenty of opportunities for the Magpies to take the lead.
Just before the 20-minute mark Bustamante beat his man down the right-hand side and dribbled into the danger area, before a zipped pass across the face of goal managed to evade a touch which surely would have found the back of the net.
In the 32nd minute, Lewis Williams received the ball on the left-hand side, a trademark cutback was followed by a whipped effort just missing the top right corner of the net.
Just a minute after Williams’ close call, the Geordies took the lead against the run of play after a ball played in from the right-hand side was struck into the back of the net by Dan Carr.
Hanwell had the chance to double their advantage soon after, a free kick into the box was met with a header, hitting the top of the woodwork and bouncing out of play.
Billy Walker had two opportunities to equalise before half time, with the first chance coming in the 43rd minute from a dangerous ball into the area from Roundell, which just missed the oncoming Walker at the back post.
Walker then struck the bar in added time of the first half, after a well delivered corner from Carmichael was met with an off-balanced shot in the six-yard-box. Smith appeared to be pushed as he looked to tuck in the rebound, but the Geordies cleared their lines, and the half time whistle was blown.
Immediately after the break Williams had a chance to create the equaliser after a fantastic run into the box, however the winger attempted to square it to the oncoming Cam Munn, which was well dealt with by the Hanwell defence.
The Geordies attacked back in the 47th minute, striking the bar for a second time, after a well-placed cross was headed on by Jordy Mongoy who looped it onto the woodwork.
After a few half-chances, the Magpies finally made the most of one after Munn’s pass was latched onto by Bustamante on the right-hand side, the winger beating his marker in the box and slotting under the Hanwell keeper Sam Beasant.
The torrential rain was making the pitch much more difficult to play fluid football for both sides, and with standing water starting to appear in places, the referee briefly paused the game for an inspection. After a few tense minutes, the referee decided the final ten minutes would be safe to play in the current conditions.
Wimborne pushed for a winner but were unable to create any further clearcut opportunities, with the match ending all square, and the points shared. Next for the Magpies is another long away trip to Plymouth Parkway on Tuesday night, before welcoming high-flying Gloucester to the Wyatt Homes Stadium on Saturday.
A special mention and thanks all those who travelled with us to Hanwell, your support is always appreciated!
