Match Preview – Wimborne Town vs Weymouth

This County cup tie has already been postponed four times. But there’s a long way to go before it overtakes the current British record for postponements of a single fixture. The Scottish Cup 2nd Round tie between Inverness Thistle and Falkirk was scheduled for 6th January 1979. However after 29 postponements it was finally played on February 22nd 1979. Falkirk won 4-0 in the 30th attempt to stage the match. Three days later Falkirk lost 1-0 at Dundee in the first attempt to stage the Third Round tie!

In his post-match interview after Saturday’s draw against Bemerton, Wimborne Manager Tim Sills said that his line-up for this cup tie would be a mixture of players who’ve been on the bench recently, and some of Christer’s Reserves who have been playing so well this season. He’ll take the opportunity to rest some tired legs after playing on heavy pitches. So we could well see Scott Arnold, Harry Baker, Jack Hoey, Cam Munn, Addwell Chipangura, George Griffiths, Sonny Pike, Ben Rodwell, and Luke Sheehy – and what an exciting team that would form the basis of.

Four consecutive victories lifted The Terras to fourteenth in National South, thirteen points clear of the relegation zone. With consolidating their league status the top priority of manager Bobby Wilkinson, I understand that Weymouth are likely to send their Under 23 team for this game.

Whichever players are in the starting line-ups, they will view this as an opportunity to show “the boss” that they deserve consideration for the bigger games. And this competition represents a great opportunity for players and clubs to bag some silverware. Wimborne last won the Dorset Senior Cup in 2018; Weymouth in 2020.

The story of the Dorset Senior Cup so far this season …

– Thirteen teams entered.
– Three were given a bye straight through the first round into the quarter-finals – Dorchester, Hamworthy United and Poole.
– The other ten teams played in five first round ties – this is the last of those games to be decided.
– That would have left eight teams in the quarter-finals. Unfortunately Hamworthy United then dropped out, leaving seven. One of those, Hamworthy Recreation were then given a bye straight through the quarters into the semi-finals.
– Two of the quarter-finals have already been played: Bridport beat Sherborne 3-1, their reward is a semi-final at home to Ham Rec also on this Tuesday evening; and Shaftesbury won 1-0 at  Dorchester.
– The remaining quarter-final will be the winners of our tie this evening against Poole Town at Tatnam. Then the winners of that tie will visit The Rockies in the semi-final. The team that comes through this half of the draw would fancy their chances of lifting the Cup.

The last time Wimborne played Weymouth, in a pre-season game at New Cuthbury back in July, The Terras beat The Magpies 3-2. In order to make sure that the game is played, it will take place on the 3G pitch. Please be aware that there is no pitch-side seating or covered areas.
