Wimborne Town fell to a three-goal home defeat against National League South side Worthing in the FA Cup Third Round Qualifying on Saturday afternoon.

Despite a valiant effort from The Magpies, Jack Spong’s first half penalty gave the Rebels the advantage, before two second-half goals settled the tie for the higher opposition.

Tim Sills made three changes from Tuesday night’s win against Plymouth Parkway, with Billy Walker, Max Bustamante and Will Fletcher all coming into the side.

Wimborne started the game with intensity and had the first chance of the afternoon as Bustamante latched on to Fletcher’s lobbed pass, forcing an early corner. However, 13 minutes in, Temi Babalola was set free to charge into the box and was subsequently tripped by Cam Plain. The referee pointed to the spot and Spong confidently dispatched the penalty, sending Plain the wrong way.

The home side fought back, the best opportunity coming when Bustamante was brought down on the edge of the box. Lewis Williams stepped up to take the free kick, forcing Worthing keeper into a good save to his left to concede a corner.

Showing their higher league class, Worthing were a constant threat and had a chance to double their lead after Matt Burgess found space on the left-hand side and unleashed a shot on goal, rattling it off the crossbar. Razzaq Coleman De-Graft also had a good chance as the ball was passed across goal, but his attempt was superbly blocked by a perfectly timed slide from Cam Munn.

Wimborne started to find their feet in the final stages of the first half, causing Worthing some concern. A long throw was launched into the box causing a moment of pinball and panic in the Worthing area and after multiple attempts on goal the offside flag was eventually raised.

The Magpies started the second half with purpose, aiming to find an equaliser, but that task was made even more difficult on 62nd minutes as substitute Packham, who had just come on, got on the end of a deep well-delivered cross to double the score.

Following the second goal, the Rebels dominated proceedings, with Wimborne limited to only one last real big chance as Joe Smith’s close-range effort was fired over after a slight bobble on the ball.

As the game started to wind down to an inevitable conclusion, substitute Roberts slipped in the box when defending a cross, Babalola poking home the loose ball to complete the victory for Worthing.

The full-time whistle brought Wimborne’s journey in this season’s FA Cup to an end, as well as the 13-game unbeaten home streak. Tim Sills’ side will take positives from going toe-to-toe with very good opposition, who finished last season just one point off the top of National South, as The Magpies begin their FA Trophy campaign next Saturday at home to Weymouth.
