Wimborne Town’s FA Trophy run came to an end after a dramatic last-minute header from Chatham substitute Kofi Anokye-Boadi.

Wimborne created a number of chances, particularly in the first half, and missed a penalty, but exit the Trophy after The Chats made the breakthrough with practically the last kick of the game.

Tim Sills reverted to a more familiar starting eleven after picking a youthful side to take on Hamworthy Recreation in the Dorset Senior Cup in midweek. Josh Carmichael came in for Josh McQuoid and new goalkeeper Kai Crampton replaced the injured Cam Plain in two changes from last week’s goalless draw at Hungerford.

The Magpies started the better of the two sides, with Max Bustamante and Will Fletcher amassing a number of chances within the first 45.

However, The Chats goalkeeper, Harvey, was in fine form, making two eye-catching saves in short succession. Firstly, he had to react well to Bustamante arriving in the box from close range, somehow turning behind for a corner.

Then, just three minutes later, he had to be at his acrobatic best to deny Fletcher from outside of the box, the striker’s shot swirling in the air to test the stopper.

The visitors started to grow into the game, firing a chance narrowly wide after good work from down the lefthand side, before being denied by a fantastic last-ditch block from captain, Sam Jackson, on the half hour mark.

Then came the biggest chance of the half. Fletcher collected the ball on the right, linking well with Munn, before feeding the fall onto the run of Bustamante, his shot saved superbly by Harvey to tip behind for a corner.

However, it wasn’t just Chatham’s keeper who was having a good game, with Magpies debutant Kai Crampton putting in a very calm and collected performance, catching practically every cross that came his way, as well as a multitude of zipped passes out wide from in between the sticks.

After the break the hosts continued to press for an opener and were on the front foot for the majority of the game, with Lewis Williams and Bustamante causing their opposing fullbacks plenty of problems.

The Chats though were looking increasingly dangerous on the counter and caused a scare in the Wimborne back line in the 65th minute, with a shot from a tight angle brushing past the face of goal.

Then came the major flashpoint of the game. Wimborne were awarded a penalty in the 74th minute after Harvey collided with Williams in the box, The Chats keeper perhaps fortunate to not see a second yellow after being booked early in the game. Up stepped Will Fletcher, with the opportunity to give the hosts the lead, however his effort was pulled wide of the post with the score remaining goalless.

In a bid to avoid penalties attackers Anjani Burchall, Joe Smith and Joe Ryan were introduced, before nine minutes of stoppage time were added by the referee.

The stoppage time passed lastly without incident until a long ball down the left was collected by Chatham’s winger, who was adjudged to have been fouled in a good crossing area near the edge of the box.

The in-swinging cross found Anokye-Boadi near the penalty spot, whose subsequent header found the back of the net giving the visitors the lead in the final minute of injury time.

The full-time whistle blew shortly after, sealing victory for the visitors and a cruel exit for The Magpies.

Despite the late heartbreak, it was a good performance by Wimborne who, on another day, might have put away their chances to progress. The Magpies will now look to recover before coming up against an in-form Gosport Borough at the Wyatt Homes Stadium on Tuesday night.
