Thursday 26th December – Southern League Premier Division South

The much anticipated Boxing Day match became a fairly flat stop-start affair with neither side able to get into their stride with the referee blowing up throughout the match. However, the Magpies took the match to the Whites from the off.

The Whites hit back with Downing shooting wide of Plain’s goal, ex-Magpie Toby Holmes mistimed an effort in front of goal while shortly afterwards Hippolyte-Patrick forced a super save by Plain.

Magpies hit back quickly with Bayston’s effort going well wide before Burbidge forced a fingertip save from Whites keeper Armstrong.

Back at the other end in this back and forth match, Plain again pulled off a super block from Howe who looked like he would open the scoring. That opening goal was not to be for the hosts, instead, step up Sam Bayston, he latched onto the ball just outside the box, cutting inside the defence he blasted a right-foot shot into the top corner leaving Armstrong no chance, 1-nil to the Magpies on 33 minutes.

The Magpies had another chance in front of an open goal but Tony Lee was unable to make his effort count. There was only one more chance for the hosts in the first half which Howe was unable to make it count.

Early in the second half, Hippolyte-Patrick got the better of Plain sending a low down shot past the Magpies keeper on 52 minutes to level things up so it really was game on at this point for both sides.

The Magpies didn’t seem to have anything in reserve during the second half, very few chances passed their way and the hosts controlled the stop-start second half. Players were warned for diving, there were late tackles from both sides but the heavy wet pitch conditions didn’t really help although it was the same for both sets of players.

Several decisions each way amazed both sets of fans and even the benches with the host bench being talked too midway through the second half when shouts of “get on with the match” were heard from around the ground.

Howe went down in the Magpies box on 58 minutes with the hosts screaming for a penalty which was ignored, more screams for a penalty when Holmes was claimed to have been impeded as Plain parried the ball away from his goal, again these shouts were ignored.

Bayston was all set to put the Magpies back in the lead but for Downing to stop him in his tracks and at the other end of the pitch he converted a penalty on 72 minutes to give the Whites the lead for the first time in the match which they were not going to give up after Hippolyte-Patrick was fouled.

Plain on his comeback from injury was in action putting in some great saves, Wannell was denied a chance and with the hosts pushing forward, the visitors were looking to break to grab an equaliser which wasn’t to come.

The hosts were awarded a free-kick outside the box, around 25 yards out up steps Benson who had to wait while players were protesting to the referee, once all had settled Plain was let no chance at all even though he flew through the air in the right direction he was never going to stop this superb free-kick which put the match to bed on 84 minutes, a curling shot into the top corner sunk the Magpies hearts.

Back at the other end, Bayston had the last chance of the match to grab a late goal go over the bar.
